George S. Irving "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark by Alvin Schwartz" (Caedmon, TC1794, 1986)
UPDATE: The ass-kickingly generous Dr. Terror was gracious enough to upload a totally great sounding rip in the comments section here, so I've separated out the tracks, re-tagged it & uploaded it w/ album art over the original zip. If you downloaded the earlier version (sourced from my static-laden LP) I think you'll find this new version to be a drastic improvement. Thanks again Dr. Terror!
UPDATE II: Some folks were having trouble extracting a few of the files, so hopefully the third time's the charm here
Sourced from folklore scholar Alvin Schwartz's 1981 collection of the same name, "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark" features a familiar batch of concepts at work (opener "The Big Toe" is even mentioned in the liner notes as "having almost as many variants as storytellers"), but Irving is clearly having fun with the material and the addition of background music makes the LP almost seem more like an early '70's Troll record (click here and here for examples) than many of Caedmon's other offerings. Still it IS clearly Caedmon -- the literary angle is high, and the mix of jokey quick sketches and creepier bits work well together in conjuring up the intended sleep over/ campfire/ dark room vibe, making the album well suited for kids who like a few hackles.
"So put on the recording, sit back with a friend (or alone, if you dare), and let your flesh crawl. AND TURN OUT THOSE LIGHTS!"

The book series was hugely popular when I was in grade school in the early 90's and the teachers were always anxious to bust them out whenever the leaves started to turn. It has been so many years since I have set foot in an elementary school and I wonder if Hallowe'en is still as big as it used to be.

I actually have this on cassette, minus the pops and scratches... I'll see if I can dig it up and if it's still playable I'll see if I can get a decent rip outta it! I love "Me Tie Dough-Ty Walker" - the first time I gave it a listen that scream at the end scared the shit out of me - and I was in high school at the time!

I have a nice version, unfortunatly it's only 2 tracks. One side per track.
If you want it let me know where to and how you'd like me to send it (Rapid etc...)

Dr.Terror: Yeah, that would be great! I'm sure I can break it up into tracks & re-post. Any ol' method you want to use to get it to me is cool by me.

oh, and just hit my email on the main page if you want to send it directly to me.
Thanks again!

Hey Jason....Would you happen to have this Halloween album.."The Cool Ghoul's Phantasmagorical Funny Fonograf Record," on the Artists Records label. This was a local guy here in Cincinnati,Ohio back in the
early 70's.He had a show called Scream-In which was hysterical and lasted about 2 1/2 years. Also,I might have one or two Halloween albums for you that you might not have.Let me know and I'll upload them to you...Tiki-Tim

That would be great Dr.Terror......
10/27/2006 6:46 PM
Never mind. I have it on a CD and it plays fine in a normal CD player, but it's all jumbled when playing through my PC.
10/27/2006 7:05 PM
Sorry Tiki-Tim, I haven't been able to find a good copy of that myself. I had a dub of it on tape (that sounded pretty crummy) some years back but even that has gone missing. Maybe another computer will work for you Dr. Terror?

I'm surprised no one has commented that this album is narrated by the narrator of "Underdog"! (Also the voice of Riff-Raff, others.) George S. Irving is one of my favorite voice artists.

Alvin Schwartz used to write Superman comics, btw, and is the author of "An Unlikely Prophet", acclaimed by Alan Moore and others...

I just got the The Cool Ghoul's Phantasmagorical Funny Fonograf Record you asked about off ebay in CD form. Not sure how it will be as I'm sure it is a burned copy. I'll post it when it comes in. I've seen the LP on ebay as well.
