BBC Records - Mike Harding "Sound Effects Vol 13: Death And Horror" (1977), "Sound Effects Vol 21: More Death And Horror" (1978)
Spurred on by the fine folks in my comments section, I'm throwing up a pair of late '70's BBC Records releases focusing on good ol' "Death and Horror". The album jackets for both of these records made me vaguely uneasy when I was a kid; the classic British fixation on torture devices is certainly front and center and the gruesome collection of track titles ("Branding Iron On Flesh!", "Red Hot Poker Into Eye!", "Neck Twisted And Broken!") more than promised to deliver the goods (turns out though that the most grueling thing for me was breaking the albums down into separate tracks -- "Sound Effects Vol 13" has 91! That task aside, I'd like to extend a special thanks to my pal Dennis for loaning me his copy). By the way, there's a third LP in this series that I've never come across, anyone out there have it laying around?

Awesome! Thanks Jason. This saves me buying them off ebay. There are several copies of the 3rd Volume on ebay right now, but they are way more than I'd be willing to pay for them.
BTW - the next few days I am going to be working on a new Halloween Records and CD files listening page. Splitting it off from my Disney Listening page. Here's the link to that page : Disney LIstening Library Index Page . You will be able to get there when it is done through my Dave's Halloween Sounds page that is in your link list. Some will for now just show a Greyscale colored LP cover meaning I don't have the file uploaded to my PC yet. Jason if you or anyone else sees any of the recordings you would like to have just email me through the email button at the bottom of the page. I've disabled the right click function on all of my listening pages because I've had some trouble from some of the copywrite owners. I say if they'd re-release the recordings we wouldn't have to provide them online as the only means for people to ever get a chance to hear them.

Thanks for these. I never knew there was a third.

if the third one is "Even More Death and Horror" (#27), yeah I have that.
It might be a couple weeks until I can get around to the daunting task of ripping the thing into tracks, though.

"Even more" is the third one. I'll bet those 60 track sound FX discs are probably a pain to rip.
Jason, could you please, pretty please with puss of top, put up Witch's Brew(2 songs)? I have to know if thats the song from my old music class. It's an old inside joke between my buddies and myself and it would freak them out to hear it again.
Thanks,
Dr.Terror

Nice to see someone else was obsessed with these sick little delights like I was when I was 10. Although, the covers are infinitely more horrifying than anything on the actual album. I wonder how they got away with the cover of "Death And Horror" - I remember seeing this in Boots in Macclesfield around 1980!
As I recall, Even More... isn't as much fun, but you do get the classic triffid sound from the BBC's version of Day Of The Triffids.
If you want to freak yourself out, have a listen to "Premature Burial" from Vol. 2 in the dark - it's one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard.
Ironically, I was reminded of these albums the other week at Bestival, when DJ Yoda managed to mix some of the male screams from the first volume into one of his sets. Bizarre.

Sleazy: ...and so clearly this kind of synergistic sampling enthusiasm augers well for a MOJO (or at lest "Q Classic") print issue dedicated to BBC Library sounds in general (if not cheesy horror records in particular), right? C'mon!
Ah well, even if not I'm certainly glad you found 'em again here (& I'd like to pretend that DJ Yoda did the same).

brilliant stuff!

Well, Jason, I did once write a column for MOJO Collections about these very albums... but a full trip through the back pages of the BBC library never materialised, sadly. Damn them. I'll dig out that page though, it was more of a fond reminiscence than a proper investigation.
Thanks again - my brother is currently enjoying again the sounds of "The Mad Gorilla"...

So this is where they got that really eerie noise that comes before the organ on side B of "Horror Sounds of the Night". It's the "Phantom of the Opera ('organ' Sounds)" track from "Death And Horror". I listen to it, and it still sounds pretty creepy even after 11 years. I can still hear it in my head. I've been trying to figure out what that sound was for years. I've been doing some research on the sources for "Horror Sounds of the Night". I still haven't found out where they got that organ music I keep hearing in my head. Does anyone know any info about it?
10/19/2006 7:13 PM
OK, I think I know where they got the organ music that comes after "Phantom of the Opera ('organ' sounds)". I think it came from the last part of the "Phantom of the Organ" track on the Power Records "Ghostly Sounds" album, after the pealing of the church bells. Man, I can still hear it in my head after listening to that track. Man oh man!

I've got both of these!

Oh… sadly the links are removed now. I was so curious about the sounds.
cheers,

Yeah, why did you remove the links? Did the BBC find out about these downloads and ask you to remove them before they sue you or something?
7/14/2008 3:18 PM
I'd really like to hear and enjoy these. Please put the links back up soon! Thanks!
