...and this post of "Richard Taylor: Nightmare" (Major Records M-36, 1962), you ought to be able to figure out the scoop here; yes it's more of the fantastic world of low-budget monster magazine-ad records from the early 1960's! There are two more in this series ("Horror" & "Fright") that I'll get up before long, both so that the complete set is once again in circulation and so that everyone has more than enough time to plan their "eerie midnight ghoul parties" (for which ads of the day assured the public these LPs were "perfect" for). As always if anyone has alternate rips I'd love to hear them -- I'm sure there are a few more floating around & I'd be more than happy to swap mine out if better versions exist.

Thanks Jason. I have all Terror, Horror and Nightmare. I'm just missing a rip of the "Fright" LP. Is it just me or is the narrator on these LPs actually 3 different people? They say they are all Richard Taylor, but it sounds like 3 different people to me.

Jason, another great post. I've had rips of these for awhile and will try to get around comparing my versions to yours.
ReplyDeleteBut, I LOVE these albums. Unlike the more formal sound of Vincent Price or Basil Rathbone Poe recordings, Richard Taylor actually does just sound to me, like some creepy maniac recording these things in a basement, possibly sitting on a chair made of human skin... The wanton electric guitar and/or spliced music (I read somewhere the background cues may have been off-air recordings minus dialogue from Boris Karloff's THRILLER TV show) is great too, not to mention those minimalist, scary, black and white covers.
Dave: I have Fright, I'll post it soon; I think my copy of Horror might be jacked though, so maybe I can score that off you.
ReplyDeleteSteve: Yeah! These are really among my favorites of their genre! There's a crazy manic energy to the reading & the background guitar stuff is totally great! Your description of Taylor (even if he's a house construct, though I mostly think it's one guy myself) is dead-on. These are really aching for a full-on CD reissue w/ out-takes & recording session photos, huh? YES THEY ARE.
I'll get them online soon Jason, and compare. My records came from Hellsbane. I need to get around and ripiing the CD I promised him. Mine will be 192 kbps so once I get them online I'll cimpare as well. Thanks again.
